What is the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4)?
The Energy Company Obligation (EC04) is a policy set out by the government to deliver energy-saving efficiency improvements to homes in the UK. It is now in its fourth stage. The scheme will run from Spring 2022 until March 2026. The policy is set out to reduce home energy consumption by improving home heating in Great Britain through solar panels, insulation products and energy efficient air source heat pumps.
The government’s scheme obligates Big Energy Providers like E.on, EDF and Npower to name a few to commit to providing grants to applicants that fit a criteria. Apply now to see if you meet the simple criteria.

Who funds these schemes?
The government brought in the Energy Company Obligation scheme to get Big Energy Providers to commit to providing home energy-saving grants.
Some of these include British Gas, E.on, Npower, Scottish Power and many more that have a customer base of 150,000 or more. These big brands are obligated to saving you money on household heating bills, help with fuel poverty and reduce yours and the UK’s carbon footprint.
What are the energy grant schemes?
What is the Affordable Warmth Scheme?
Introduced in 2017, the Affordable Warmth Obligation (ECO2) tackled fuel poverty in the private sector. Its aim was to improve energy efficiency in the home. Focused on supporting low income, vulnerable and poor fuel households it provided funding. To receive the grant each applicant had to meet a criteria.
There is now a revised scheme from Spring 2022 more commonly known as the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4). It now includes solar panels, air source heat pumps and internal wall insulation
Are the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme and the Affordable Warmth Scheme the same?
Both schemes are similar. The Affordable Warmth Scheme known as ECO2 was introduced in April 2017 (an already evolved scheme) with targeting 70% of the obligation. In Spring 2022 this was revised and now referred to as the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) now targeting 100% of the obligation. The scheme evolves and changes every so often but with the same core purpose – to help keep homes warmer, reduce home energy bills and reduce carbon emissions.
Which energy providers do these schemes cover?
Gas and electricity companies with more than 150,000 customers are automatically required to deliver ECO3. Some of these include British Gas, EDF Energy, Scottish Power, E.on, Npower and SSE. Other suppliers can also be found here.
Each supplier will have a different criteria which the applicant will need to match to be successful in receiving a home energy-saving improvement grant.
What is ECO4 or obligation 4?
ECO stands for Energy Company Obligation. 4 stands for the 4th revision of the obligation. Previous schemes ECO, ECO2 and ECO3 have now expired and evolved into ECO4 running from Spring 2022 until March 2026.
How do these schemes work?
You could be entitled to a FREE home energy-saving grant.
Are you a homeowner or private tenant with electrical, oil or LGP bottle powered heating?
The scheme is aimed at those wanting to save on heating bills through energy saving measures including FREE solar panels, air source heat pump and insulation.
